Psalm 27:1 — 'The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?' David writes this as a man who has spent years running from people who want to kill him. He isn't naive about danger.
'The Lord is my light.' Light in Scripture is about seeing clearly — understanding, guidance, truth. When you're in darkness, literally or emotionally, God is the one who lets you see enough to take the next step.
'My salvation.' Not just 'the one who saves me.' The one who is my salvation. Yeshua, in Hebrew — the same root as Jesus' name. David is saying: God himself is my rescue. Not a plan. Not a strategy. A person.
'The stronghold of my life.' A stronghold is a fortress, a place you run when you're under attack. David is saying: my entire life is anchored in the one who cannot be moved. My identity, my security, my future — all of it is safe in him.
And then the questions: 'Whom shall I fear? Of whom shall I be afraid?' He's not pretending enemies don't exist. He's measuring them against the size of his God. And the measurement comes out one way every time.
So whatever you're afraid of today — a person, a diagnosis, a future, a failure — Psalm 27:1 is the verse to hold onto. Not because the fear is fake. But because the one who is your light, your salvation, and your stronghold is real.
