Proverbs 17:17 — 'A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.'
'At all times.' That's the test. Most people can love when things are easy. A real friend keeps loving when things are messy — when you're hard to be around, when you're going through it, when there's nothing in it for them.
The second half doubles the point. 'A brother is born for adversity.' Family — the people who really show up — were made for the hard times. They don't disappear when life turns.
Solomon is blending the two on purpose. The best friends become like family. The best family acts like the best friends.
