Hebrews 4:16 — 'Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.'
Two words to underline: confidence, and grace. We don't usually pair confidence with approaching a throne. Kings are intimidating. Holy Kings, even more so.
But the throne is described not as a throne of judgment — for those in Christ — but a throne of grace. The thing the King is dispensing is mercy.
And the invitation is to come with confidence. Not after you've cleaned up. Not when you finally feel worthy. Confidently, because the previous verses just established that Jesus is your high priest — he knows your weakness and represents you.
If you've been hesitating to pray because you feel disqualified, this verse cuts the line. Come anyway. The throne is set up for you.
