Some background: in the ancient world, kings would set up statues of themselves throughout their territory. The image announced: this land is mine; I rule here.
Genesis 1 takes that idea and flips it. The 'image' God puts in his territory is not a statue. It's a person. Every person. Walking around, showing what the King is like.
And it's 'male and female' together. Both carry the image. Both fully. There's no second-tier humanity in Genesis.
If this verse is true, no person is ever ordinary. The cashier, the homeless man, the political opponent — every face is the face of someone God made to bear his image. That changes how you treat people. It has to.
