Joshua had just lost his mentor, Moses. He was about to lead an entire nation into a hostile land. And God said: 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.'
It's a striking verse because courage is commanded. Not 'try to feel brave.' Be strong and courageous. As if it's a choice you can make.
And God says it four times in chapter one. That's not for emphasis only — it's because Joshua needed to hear it that many times. So do we.
The basis isn't 'because you're capable.' It's 'because I am with you.' Courage in the Bible is almost never confidence in yourself. It's confidence in who's with you.
