In John 8, Jesus says: 'I am the light of the world.' In Matthew 5, talking to his disciples, he says: 'You are the light of the world.' How can both be true?
The answer is reflection. The moon doesn't generate light; it reflects the sun. When the sun is up, the moon is shining — borrowed light, but real light. That's the picture.
When you belong to Jesus, his light shines through you. You don't manufacture it. You just refuse to cover it.
'A city on a hill cannot be hidden.' Jesus' point: visibility is built in. You don't have to advertise. You just have to stop hiding.
He continues: 'Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father.' The point of the light isn't you. It's pointing people upstream, to the one whose light you're reflecting.
