Do not be conformed — be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Paul's strategy for actually changing as a person: it starts upstream, in how you think.
The episode in a glance.
- 01'Conformed' = pressed into a shape by something outside you.
- 02'Transformed' is the same Greek word as 'metamorphosis' — change from the inside.
- 03The lever is the mind: change what you think, and behavior follows.
- 04The goal is discernment — knowing the will of God by reflex.
Read along.
'Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.' Two verbs do all the work here.
Conformed is what the world does to you — it presses you into its shape if you let it. Like dough in a cookie cutter. The pressure is constant.
Transformed is a different word entirely. In Greek it's metamorphoo — where we get metamorphosis. It's the kind of change a caterpillar goes through. Total. Internal. Irreversible.
And the lever for that change is the mind. Paul doesn't say 'try harder.' He says 'renew your mind.' Change the input — what you read, watch, dwell on — and behavior follows downstream.
The goal is discernment. Not a rulebook for every situation, but a renewed mind that can read a moment and instinctively know what's good, acceptable, and perfect to God.
