Nebuchadnezzar built a golden idol and ordered everyone to bow. Three young Jewish men — Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — refused. The punishment was a furnace.
Their answer is one of the bravest sentences in the Bible: 'If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods.'
Two halves. We believe God can rescue us. That's faith.
But if not — we still won't bow. That's deeper faith. Trust that isn't transactional. Obedience that doesn't depend on the outcome.
Most of us know how to trust God for the rescue. The harder question is whether we'll trust him in the 'but if not.' That's where the gold is.
