God sends the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king. He arrives at Jesse's house, sees the oldest son — tall, impressive — and thinks 'this is the one.'
God stops him. 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.'
Samuel was a prophet. He'd heard God's voice for decades. And he was still about to pick the wrong guy based on looks.
If Samuel could get it wrong, so can we. We rank people by appearance, success, charisma — and we miss what God actually values.
The youngest son, the one nobody bothered to call in from the fields, ended up being king. His name was David. God saw what no one else bothered to look for.
