Romans 8:1 — 'There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.' This is the hinge of the book of Romans. Chapter 7 ends in anguish: 'Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me?' Chapter 8 begins with the answer.

'No condemnation.' Not 'less condemnation.' Not 'conditional condemnation.' No. Zero. None. The legal verdict is in, and it is: not guilty. Not because you were innocent, but because Jesus was condemned in your place.

'For those who are in Christ Jesus.' This is the location. If you're united with Christ — if you're in him — the condemnation that was heading for you hit him instead. That's the exchange.

This is not a feeling. It's a fact. You may feel condemned. You may remember your sins. You may struggle with guilt. But the reality is: there is no condemnation. The judge has ruled. The case is closed. The debt is paid.

And the rest of Romans 8 builds on this foundation. If there's no condemnation, then there's no separation. Nothing can separate you from the love of God. That's the freedom this verse opens up.
