Zephaniah 3:17 — 'The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.' This is one of the most tender verses in the prophets.

Zephaniah has spent most of the book announcing judgment. And then, at the end, he pivots. God speaks to the remnant — the ones left after the cleansing — and he says: I'm not just with you. I'm happy about you.

'He will rejoice over you with gladness.' God's joy is personal. It's directed. He looks at his people and feels glad. Not resigned. Not begrudging. Glad. That's the emotion of God toward the ones he has saved.

'He will quiet you by his love.' The word quiet means to hush, to settle, to still. His love is the mechanism. When you know you're loved like this — rejoiced over, sung over, delighted in — your soul finally stops panicking.

'He will exult over you with loud singing.' God sings. Over you. With joy. That's the image. The creator of the universe, the judge of nations, the holy one — sings over his people. That's how much he loves you.
