John 15 — 'I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.'

It's a horticultural picture. A vine and its branches. The branch doesn't manufacture fruit. It just stays attached to the vine, and life flows through it, and fruit comes out the other end.

Notice the verb: bears, not produces. The branch's job isn't to strain. Its job is to stay connected. The vine does the work.

'Apart from me you can do nothing.' That's not an exaggeration. Detached branches don't slow down — they die. Whatever you produce on your own runs out fast.

Abiding is the whole secret. Staying connected. Reading the word, praying, walking with him through the day. That's not extra credit. That's how the life works at all.
