Ephesians 2:8-9 is one of the cleanest summaries of how salvation works: 'For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.'

Grace is the cause. Faith is the channel. Grace is what God gives. Faith is the empty hand that receives it. Without grace there's nothing to receive. Without faith there's no receiving.

'This is not your own doing.' Even the faith is a gift. You don't manufacture trust in God. He awakens it in you.

'Not a result of works, so that no one may boast.' This is why the gospel scandalizes the religious mind. It removes any basis for boasting. The thief on the cross and the lifelong saint walk into the same kingdom on the same terms.

Salvation, by definition, lands as gift. The moment you try to make it a wage, you've stopped talking about the gospel.
