Read along.

In the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells the crowd around him: 'You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.'

Notice the grammar. He doesn't say 'try to be light.' He doesn't say 'someday you'll be light.' He says 'you are.' That's the indicative mood — a statement of fact.

Light doesn't have to advertise. It just has to be uncovered. A candle under a basket isn't broken; it's just hidden.

Then Jesus adds a strange image: 'A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.' Ancient cities were often built on hills for defense, and at night, their lamps could be seen for miles. They didn't try to be seen. They just were.

That's the calling. You don't have to perform. You don't have to be impressive. You just have to be uncovered — letting the life of Christ in you shine where you actually live.
