Ephesians 2:8 is one of the clearest statements about salvation in the Bible: 'For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.'

Grace is unmerited favor. You didn't earn it. You didn't qualify for it. You weren't chosen because of potential. Grace means God acted while you were still a mess.

Faith is the hand that receives the gift. It doesn't create the gift; it doesn't contribute to the gift. It simply takes what is offered. That's why Paul says 'through faith' — faith is the channel, not the source.

'And this is not your own doing.' Paul goes further than most people are comfortable with. Even your faith isn't something you generated. It's a response to grace, and grace is entirely God's initiative.

The result is clear: 'so that no one may boast.' If salvation were partly earned, we'd compare scores. But because it's entirely a gift, the only response is gratitude — and the only boasting is in the Giver.
