Romans 8:38-39 is one of the most sweeping promises in the Bible: 'For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.'
Paul is building a case. He starts with the two bookends of human experience: death and life. Then he moves to the supernatural: angels and rulers. Then time itself: present and future. Then space: height and depth. Then he adds a catch-all: anything else in all creation.
He's saying: name your fear. Is it death? Life? Spiritual attack? Political oppression? The unknown future? The heights of success or the depths of depression? None of it separates you from God's love.
And notice the certainty: 'I am sure.' Not 'I hope.' Not 'I think.' Paul is convinced, because he's seen the cross and the empty tomb. If God gave his Son, he's not going to abandon you now.
The love is 'in Christ Jesus our Lord.' It's not abstract. It's the love of a person who died for you and rose for you. And because it's in him, it's as secure as he is.
