Proverbs 16:9 is a dose of humility for ambitious people: 'The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.'
Planning is good. The proverb doesn't say 'don't plan.' It says your plans aren't final. You can map the route, but God controls the road.
'The Lord establishes his steps.' The word 'establishes' means to make firm, to direct, to prepare. God doesn't just allow your steps. He shapes them. He causes them to land where he intends.
This is both a warning and a comfort. Warning: your five-year plan is provisional. Comfort: even when your plan fails, your steps are still established by the Lord.
The wise person holds plans loosely and holds God's direction tightly. You do your best, and you trust him with the rest.
