John 16:33 is Jesus' final summary before Gethsemane: 'I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.'

Notice the honesty. Jesus doesn't say 'if you follow me, life gets easy.' He says 'in the world you will have tribulation.' Tribulation is guaranteed. It's part of the deal.

But then the pivot: 'In me you may have peace.' Peace isn't the absence of tribulation. It's the presence of Christ inside it. The same Jesus who spoke these words is the one who rises from the grave three days later.

'Take heart' means cheer up, be encouraged, lift your head. It's a command. And it's grounded in the last clause: 'I have overcome the world.' Not 'I will overcome.' Have overcome. It's already done.

So your peace doesn't depend on your circumstances changing. It depends on your location — are you in him? If so, the victory he won is yours, even while the battle rages around you.
