Romans 6:23: 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.'
'Wages' is paycheck language. It's what you've earned, what you're owed. Paul says sin pays out, and the paycheck is death.
This is honest math. Not punishment imposed from outside, but the natural payoff of choosing against the source of life.
Then comes the contrast: 'free gift.' Not wages — gift. You don't earn it; you receive it. The system is broken open.
And the gift is 'in Christ Jesus our Lord.' Not in a program, not in a religion, not in a self-improvement plan. In a person.
