Hebrews 12:1: 'Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race set before us.'
'Cloud of witnesses' refers to chapter 11 — the long list of faith heroes who already finished. They're not watching us perform; they're testifying that this race is runnable.
'Lay aside every weight.' Not just sin — also weights. Things that aren't necessarily wrong but slow you down. Marathoners don't carry backpacks.
'Sin which clings so closely.' Sin sticks to you like wet clothes. Strip it off and run lighter.
'Endurance' is the key word, not speed. The Christian life is a marathon. The goal is to finish faithfully, not to win comparison games.
