James 1:2-4: 'Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.'
'Count' is an accounting word. Tally it up. Look at the trial and assign it a category. James says: file it under joy.
He's not telling you to enjoy the trial. He's telling you to reckon what the trial is producing.
Trials produce steadfastness — the ability to stand firm under pressure. You can't grow that quality in a comfort zone.
Maturity, not comfort, is the goal. God is more interested in your character than your convenience. Trials, met with faith, are the workshop.
