These are Jesus's first words from the cross. He has just been nailed to wood by Roman soldiers. The pain is incomprehensible.
And his prayer isn't for himself. It's for the men driving the nails. 'Father, forgive them.'
Notice he offered forgiveness while the offense was still happening. Not after a confession. Not after repentance. In the middle of the act.
'They know not what they do.' He names their ignorance with mercy, not contempt. This is what divine love looks like in real time. And this is the Savior you have.
