Hebrews 12:1 — 'Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.'
Chapter 11 was the famous 'hall of faith' — Noah, Abraham, Moses, Rahab, all the unnamed ones who suffered for trusting God. Chapter 12 opens with them: that 'great cloud of witnesses.' Picture a stadium full of finishers, watching you run your lap.
'Lay aside every weight.' Runners strip down. Anything that isn't necessary gets dropped. Not just sin — 'every weight.' That includes neutral things that still slow you down. Relationships, habits, ambitions that aren't evil but aren't helping.
'The race set before you.' Yours. Not the one you wish you were running. Not someone else's. The specific course God has laid in front of you, with its specific terrain.
'With endurance.' Not a sprint. Most of the Christian life isn't dramatic moments. It's long, steady, faithful running, often in stretches where nothing seems to be happening.
And the next verse anchors all of it: 'looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.' Where your eyes go, your feet follow.
