1 John 4:19 — 'We love because he first loved us.' Eight words. The whole order of the Christian life is in them.
Notice what John doesn't say. He doesn't say 'we love so that he will love us.' He doesn't say 'we love so we'll be acceptable.' He says we love because — because something already happened to us.
'He first loved us' fixes the order. God's love is always upstream. Our love is always downstream. It flows out of being loved.
Try it the other way and you burn out fast. You can run on willpower-love for a while — being kind, being patient, being giving — but it dries up. Manufactured love runs out.
But love that comes from being loved keeps replenishing. The more you receive, the more spills out. So if you're empty, the first move isn't 'try harder to love.' It's 'sit longer in being loved.'
