Romans 5:8 — 'But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.' Paul is making a single, devastating point: the timing of God's love.
Most love in our experience is responsive. You love someone because of who they are, or what they do, or how they make you feel. Pull away the reasons, and the love gets thin.
Paul says God's love doesn't work that way. It didn't wait for us to clean up. It didn't show up after we had our act together. It arrived 'while we were still sinners.' At our worst. With no incentive on his end.
And it didn't arrive as a feeling. It arrived as an action: 'Christ died for us.' Love that lays itself down. Love that proves itself in cost.
Which means you cannot make God love you more by performing well, and you cannot make him love you less by failing. The love is fixed. It was decided before you knew about it.
