John 14:6 — 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' It's one of Jesus' most quoted lines, and one of his most resisted. People hear it as arrogant. It actually shows up in one of the gentlest scenes in the gospels.
It's the night before Jesus dies. He's at dinner with his friends. They're confused and afraid. Thomas asks: 'Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?' Jesus answers him.
'I am' isn't a casual phrase here. It echoes the divine name God gave Moses at the burning bush — 'I AM WHO I AM.' Jesus uses 'I am' over and over in John, deliberately.
'The way' — the road to God. 'The truth' — the standard reality is measured by. 'The life' — the source of the life God wants for you. Three angles, one person.
And then the hard part: 'No one comes to the Father except through me.' It's exclusive. But notice: it doesn't say 'no one comes to the Father unless they belong to my tribe / pass my test / earn my approval.' It says no one comes except through me. The door is narrow. The door is also wide open.
