Mark 10:45 — 'For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'
The context is awkward. Jesus' disciples had just been arguing about who would get the best seats in his kingdom. James and John even asked for them by name. The rest were furious.
Jesus pulled them in and flipped the whole frame. The rulers of the world lord it over their people, he said. Not so among you. The great one is the servant.
Then he held himself up as the model. The Son of Man — a title for the promised King — came not to be served but to serve. The King in person, working as a servant.
And the deepest service of all: 'to give his life as a ransom for many.' His leadership ended at a cross. That's the pattern. If you want to lead like Jesus, look down before you look up.
