'The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.' Two halves, both true. Most of us live in just one of them.
Plans are good. Proverbs elsewhere praises planning: 'the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.' This isn't an anti-planning verse.
But there's a difference between planning and controlling. We plan. He establishes. Plans are proposals. Steps are what actually happen.
Most of the time we only see God establishing our steps in hindsight. The detour that turned into the relationship. The closed door that turned into the right job. The unanswered prayer that turned into a different, better answer.
So plan well. And then hold the plans loosely. The Author of the story is also walking with you. He'll direct steps you never could have plotted.
