'Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.' Jesus said this the night before he was arrested. Within twenty-four hours, he would do exactly what he just described.
'Lay down' is the language of choice. Nobody takes a life that's been laid down. Jesus is making clear: I'm not a victim. I'm choosing this.
And he says 'for his friends.' A few verses earlier he tells his disciples: 'No longer do I call you servants. I have called you friends.' Friendship is the relational frame for what's about to happen.
So when Jesus dies the next day, it's not a tragedy that happened to him. It's the highest form of love, demonstrated on purpose, for people he calls friends.
And that means the cross isn't just an example of love. It's the definition. From now on, when the Bible says 'love,' this is the picture it wants you to see.
