Psalm 51 is David's prayer after he was confronted about Bathsheba and Uriah. Adultery. Then murder to cover it up. As low as it gets.
And he doesn't pray 'I'll do better.' He prays: 'Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.'
Notice the verb. Create. Same word used in Genesis for God making the world out of nothing. David knows he can't manufacture a clean heart from the rubble of his own. He needs a fresh creation.
He also asks for a renewed spirit — the inner posture that keeps a clean heart clean. Both pieces matter.
If you've failed badly, this is your prayer. Don't promise God you'll try harder. Ask him to do what only he can do. Then receive it.
