'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.'
Confess just means agree with God about it. Don't justify it. Don't minimize it. Call it what he calls it.
And then look at the two words describing God's response: faithful and just. Both of them matter.
Faithful — because he promised. Forgiveness isn't a mood. It's a covenant.
Just — because Jesus already paid the price. God isn't sweeping anything under the rug when he forgives you. The debt was settled at the cross. Forgiving you is the righteous thing for him to do.
And then notice the final clause — 'cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' Even the sins you forgot to confess. Even the ones you don't have words for. All of it.
