The whole verse turns on one phrase: while we were still sinners. Not after we got our act together. Not when we'd proven ourselves. Right in the middle of the mess.
Paul says love is shown — demonstrated, made visible — by what God did, not just by what God felt. Christ died. That's the proof.
Most religion runs on the opposite timing. Clean yourself up, then God will accept you. The gospel reverses it. God accepts you in your mess so that you can be cleaned up by his love.
If you grew up thinking you had to qualify for God's love, this verse is your way out. The qualification was finished at the cross. You don't earn it — you receive it.
