You are the light of the world.
Jesus didn't say 'you should be.' He said 'you are.' Identity comes first; behavior follows.

'You are the light of the world.' Jesus is in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount. He's just blessed the poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek. Now he tells them what they are.
Notice it's a statement, not a command. He doesn't say 'try to be a light.' He says you are one. Identity comes first.
Light doesn't argue. It doesn't shout. It just enters a room and changes it. That's a quieter and more powerful image than we usually give it credit for.
'A city on a hill cannot be hidden.' Jesus says visibility is part of the design. Followers of his were never meant to blend in. The point of light is to be seen.
And then the application: 'let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father.' The light isn't about you. It points past you, to God. That's how you know it's working.
