King Nebuchadnezzar has built a golden statue and ordered everyone to bow. Three Jewish exiles — Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — refuse. The penalty is being thrown into a fiery furnace.
Their answer to the king is one of the bravest sentences in the Bible: 'Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods.'
'But if not.' Two words that hold the whole weight of mature faith. We trust him. We believe he can. And even if he chooses not to rescue us — we will not bow.
That's what trust looks like when it isn't transactional. They worshiped a God they couldn't manipulate, even with their own lives.
