Ezekiel 36:26: 'I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.'
Notice the verbs. I will give. I will put. I will remove. Every action is God's. None of it is the people pulling themselves together.
A heart of stone is a heart that can't feel, can't bend, can't soften. A heart of flesh is alive — responsive, warm, vulnerable.
This is one of the most hopeful verses in the Old Testament. The people couldn't change themselves. God promised to do the surgery for them.
If your heart feels like stone today — too tired, too hurt, too cynical to feel anything — this is the verse to pray. He's done this transplant before.
