Samuel is sent to anoint a new king from Jesse's sons. He meets the oldest, Eliab — tall, strong, kingly looking — and thinks: this has to be him.
God interrupts: 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.'
Then God sends Samuel through six more sons. None of them. Finally Samuel asks: any others? Jesse mentions David, the youngest, out with the sheep, almost forgotten. That's the one.
It's a small story with a huge implication. The things that impress us — height, beauty, polish, presence — often aren't what God is measuring.
