Jewish children learn the Shema before they learn most other things: 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.'
It starts with hearing. Before you do anything, you listen to who God actually is — one, undivided, the only one of his kind.
And the response to that is total love. Not measured, not partial, not on the side. Heart, soul, might — the whole package.
Jesus was asked once for the greatest commandment in the law. He quoted this. Centuries later, it still tops the list.
