The Ten Commandments open with this: 'You shall have no other gods before me.' First, because every other command flows from getting this one right.
'Before me' is a position word. It means in front of God in your loyalty, your attention, your priorities. Not in time — in importance.
Most of us don't bow to statues. But we all worship. The test isn't what you say you believe. It's what you can't live without.
A god is whatever, if you lost it, you'd feel like life isn't worth living. The first commandment says: only God himself gets that spot. Everything else has to take a number.
