Read along.

God promises Abraham descendants like the stars. Abraham believes him. And the next line is one of the most important in the whole Bible: 'He believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.'

Notice what's missing. No sacrifice. No ceremony. No Law. None of it had been given yet.

The word 'counted' is an accounting term. God put righteousness into Abraham's column even though Abraham hadn't earned it.

Centuries later, Paul will quote this verse to argue that this is how it has always worked — grace through faith, all the way back to the beginning. Genesis 15:6 is where the gospel first peeks above the surface.
