1 John 1:9 — 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' This is the most practical verse about repentance in the Bible.

'Confess' means to agree with God. 'Yes, that was sin. You're right, I was wrong.' It's not making excuses. It's not minimizing. It's agreeing with God's assessment.

And God responds with two things: forgiveness and cleansing. 'Faithful and just to forgive' — he forgives because he promised to. And because Jesus already paid for that sin. It's not unjust to forgive you. It's just, because the price was paid.

And then 'cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' Not just forgive and leave a stain. Cleanse. Remove. Restore. That's what happens when you confess. The sin is gone. The relationship is clean. That's the promise.
