John 15:13 — 'Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.' This is the highest standard of love ever articulated.
Notice what Jesus doesn't say. He doesn't say 'greater love has no one than this: that someone feel deeply for his friends.' He says 'lay down his life.' Love, in Jesus' definition, is sacrifice. Not sentiment.
And then — this is the shocking part — Jesus goes even further. Romans 5 says he died for us while we were his enemies. So the standard he sets for friendship, he exceeds for hostility.
That's the love that makes Christianity irreplicable. It's not a philosophy. It's a person who loved like this — and invites us to love like this too.
