John 8:32 — 'And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.' Most people quote this verse without the condition that comes before it.
Jesus says it after this: 'If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth.' Abiding is the condition.
Truth in this context isn't abstract information. It's reality. And reality, Jesus says, is wrapped up in him.
'Will set you free.' From what? From sin. From lies. From the bondage of pretending. From the exhausting weight of being your own god.
Discipleship leads to truth. Truth leads to freedom. That's the order. Don't expect freedom without the first two steps.
