Read along.
Luke 15:20 — 'And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.' This is the climax of the prodigal son story.
The son is rehearsing his apology. 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' He's still a long way off. He hasn't even reached the gate.
But the father sees him. He's been watching. And he doesn't wait for the speech. He runs. In that culture, older men didn't run. It was undignified. But this father doesn't care about dignity. He cares about his son.
He embraces him. He kisses him. The son tries to get his confession out, and the father interrupts with a celebration. The robe, the ring, the feast — all before the repentance is complete.
That's the picture of God. Not a father waiting to hear if you're sorry enough. A father running toward you while you're still a long way off. That's the gospel.
