Philippians 4:6-7 — 'Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.'
'Do not be anxious about anything.' That's a command. Not a suggestion for people with calm personalities. A command for everyone. Anxiety is not a neutral emotion in Paul's mind. It's something to be resisted.
The replacement isn't willpower. It's prayer. 'In everything.' Not just the big things. The small things. The awkward things. The things you think are too minor to bother God with. He wants all of it.
'With thanksgiving.' This is crucial. You don't just dump your worries. You thank him for what he's already done. Gratitude changes the chemistry of prayer. It reminds you that God has been faithful before, which makes it easier to trust him now.
And the result: 'the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds.' Guard is a military word. Peace stations itself at the gate of your heart and refuses to let anxiety back in.
