Amos 5:24 — 'But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.' This is one of the most quoted verses from the minor prophets — and it was spoken by a shepherd.

Amos was not a professional prophet. He was a farmer and a shepherd from the southern kingdom, sent to the northern kingdom to deliver bad news. And the news was this: your worship disgusts God.

Israel was religious. They held festivals. They offered sacrifices. They sang songs. But they were also crushing the poor, selling justice for bribes, and living in luxury while the needy starved. And God said: I hate your worship.

'Let justice roll down like waters.' Not drip. Not trickle. Roll down. Like a flood. Like a river that can't be stopped. That's the picture. Justice should be abundant, public, and unstoppable.

And righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Not a one-time event. A constant flow. That's what God wants from his people. Not more songs. More justice. More righteousness. More care for the ones nobody else cares about.
