Hosea 6:6 — 'For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.' This is God's word to a nation that had turned religion into performance.
Israel was still offering sacrifices. They were still showing up at the temple. But their lives were full of injustice, adultery, and violence. God says: I don't want your rituals. I want your hearts.
'Steadfast love' is hesed — the covenant love that shows up in action. Mercy. Loyalty. Kindness. That's what God desires. Not the smoke of a thousand bulls. Not the blood of perfect lambs. Love.
'The knowledge of God' isn't trivia. It's intimacy. It's walking with him, listening to him, learning his ways. Israel knew about God. They didn't know God. And that's the difference between religion and relationship.
Jesus quotes this twice in the Gospels. Once when the Pharisees criticize him for eating with sinners. Once when they question his disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath. Both times, the point is the same: God cares more about mercy than rules.
