Deuteronomy 6:4-5 — 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.' This is the Shema, the central statement of Jewish faith for thousands of years.
'Hear, O Israel' — the word 'hear' in Hebrew means more than auditory. It means listen, pay attention, respond. This is a call to action, not passive reception.
'The Lord is one.' In a world of many gods, this was radical. But it's not just saying God is a single being. It's saying he's the only one worth your complete loyalty. No divided allegiances. No partial commitments.
'Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, and might.' Heart is desire. Soul is your inner life. Might is your strength and resources. Every part of you, directed toward him. Jesus calls this the greatest commandment. Not one of many. The greatest.
So the Shema isn't just a religious ritual. It's a declaration of exclusive, whole-person loyalty to the one God. And it's meant to be spoken daily, worn on your forehead, written on your doorposts, taught to your children. This is the center.
