1 John 1:9 — 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.'
Confession in the Bible isn't groveling. It's agreement. The Greek word means to say the same thing as God says about what you did. You stop spinning it. You name it.
'He is faithful.' He keeps his promises. He has promised forgiveness to anyone who confesses. He won't go back on that.
'And just.' That word might surprise you. Why is forgiveness called just? Because the debt was paid at the cross. God isn't sweeping sin under the rug. He's pointing to where it was already dealt with.
'And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' Forgiveness handles the legal side. Cleansing handles the internal side. Both come together, every time you bring something honest before him.
