Read along.

Joshua 1:9 is God's final word to Joshua before he leads Israel into the Promised Land: 'Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.'

This isn't a pep talk. It's a military commission, given to a man taking on an impossible task. Moses is dead. The people are stubborn. The enemies are fortified. And Joshua is told: be strong.

The phrase 'be strong and courageous' shows up three times in this chapter alone. God doesn't repeat things for decoration. He repeats what we need to hear until we believe it.

And the grounding clause is everything: 'for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.' Not just in the easy places. Not just when you're winning. Wherever you go. The wilderness, the battlefield, the home front.

Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's moving forward while afraid, because the one who commands you is also the one who goes with you.
