John 8:12: 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'
Jesus spoke this at the Feast of Tabernacles. Giant lampstands lit the temple court each night, recalling the pillar of fire that led Israel through the wilderness.
Standing in that glow, Jesus said: I am that light. He was claiming to be what the pillar of fire pointed to — God's guiding presence with his people.
'Whoever follows me' — present tense, ongoing. Following Jesus isn't a single decision but a daily orientation toward his voice.
'The light of life' means light that doesn't just show the path — it gives you what you need to walk it. Direction and power, together.
